Behind the Scenes: Finding Beta Readers for My Novel

One of the most exciting (and nerve-wracking) parts of the writing process is putting your work out there for feedback—and that’s exactly the stage I’m at right now. With the first draft of my novel finished and line edits mostly done, I’ve started looking for beta readers to help me take the next step.
Beta readers are essential for catching plot holes, confusing character arcs, and those pesky moments that make perfect sense in my head but not on the page. I’ve joined several online communities to help with this process, including the Beta Readers subreddit, where I’ve posted my blurb and book info. While it seems to be more tailored toward critique partner swaps (which I’m also open to!), it’s been a great way to connect with other writers.
The first person to read my book was actually my sister, and I’m so glad she was willing to jump in as my very first beta reader. Having someone who knows me and can offer honest feedback is incredibly encouraging—and also really helpful in catching things I didn’t notice myself.
I’m also using a site called HeyBeta, which has been a helpful tool for keeping all my feedback in one place. I like being able to track comments from different readers without juggling multiple Google Docs.
Some of my early beta readers are friends and fellow English teachers here in South Korea. Their feedback has been incredibly thoughtful and detailed—one of the perks of having such a language-savvy circle!
Beyond that, I’ve joined a few writing and beta reader Facebook groups. While the response time there has been a bit slower, it’s another path I’m exploring to widen my feedback circle.
It’s still early in the process, but I’m learning a lot about what kind of feedback is helpful, how to ask for it, and how to apply it in a way that strengthens my story. This is such a vulnerable and exciting stage of the writing journey, and I’m grateful for the readers who are willing to take the time to help me shape this book into its best version.
Stay tuned for more updates (and maybe a few sneak peeks)!
